Yeah brandishing a weapon in public is never a good idea. Castle Doctrine doesn't cover your front porch or lawn.
In a civilian setting, Never, EVER, EVER show your weapon until you are damn ready to fire it, wait for them to come into your home, then righteously unload.

Depends where you live. In Texas you can open fire during the nighttime, if you think the guy is going to steal from you...or like if you think he has already stolen something, you can chase him down, even off your property, as long as it takes to put one through his lungs. You don't need to be in fear of your life, it just needs to be night.
Don't trespass in Texas.
