Welcome to P99!
Even for myself as a returning player, starting out can be a daunting task. Make yourself very familiar with the Wiki here. There is a ton of great knowledge stored there and almost all the game mechanics are broken down in detail. The maps will also be a big help!

For levels 1-4, stay by the "Newbie Lift" (#15 on map) and start by killing even-cons (
https://wiki.project1999.com/Consider). The first level is definitely hardest, especially as a melee/hybrid character. Luckily they will go fast, and once you level up your weapon skills, and offensive + defensive skills.
After 4 you can move to "Orc Hill" (
https://wiki.project1999.com/Greater_Faydark #7) off of the "Orc Lift" (#2 on Kelethin map). These are a big step up in difficulty and you will have a tough time soloing them untwinked. Luckily it's a pretty popular leveling area and you should be able to find other people to group with. Advertise in /ooc "level 4 ranger LFG" and put /lfg on.
When you are closer to level 8, you can venture into Crushbone (
https://wiki.project1999.com/Crushbone). This is a classic EQ dungeon and is, IMO, very fun to explore. You could stay here until the late teen levels if you so choose.
Here are some quests to keep an eye out for (starting loot or XP):

Good luck & have fun!
Edit: I'm also a big fan of the "nParse" add-on. This is allowed on P99, easy to install and setup, and it will provide you with timers for your spells (buffs, snare, root etc) and also a nifty map tool:
https://www.project1999.com/forums/s...d.php?t=289949 . This will help a lot when exploring new zones. You just need to setup a macro for /loc and you can also assign it to one of your movement keys (Alt+O) to make it more streamlined.
