Yes actually, they *were* putting spike protein from a novel bat coronavirus into mice, to ultimately study how it might affect humans. Nobody is saying this is some kind of Dr.Evil research, it does have an altruistic goal, which is to protect humans from deadly viruses. However gain of function research had been deemed too dangerous and risky to experiment with, precisely because of the potential risk of a pandemic. This is why fauci is lying about it, he is trying to cover his own ass like every other slimeball bureaucrat ever.
The whole convoluted argument boils down to retarded political tribalism. If you're left, fauci good. If you're right, fauci bad. However the right is correct on this, and the left is just kicking and screaming like an infant to deny it.
