The hypernormalization film is basically an idea salad by Adam Curtis. Some good things in there. But overall, I don't think it helps people make sense of much. The kind of fragmented thinking media like this encourages is part of the problem.
Basically two unrelated ideas were connected in my head. (1) That there is a lack of legitimacy in modern American media and political elites. (2) Distraction is used as a way to direct political anger to safer targets.
Curtis weaves these points and others into a movie and acts like there is some thesis called hypernormalization that comes out of it. But in the end, a theory it doesn't make.
