Fungi face tanking will take you a decent way, but that ends pretty abruptly. Without double attack it doesn't really matter how much haste or weapons you have, your dps is still gonna be shit.

Low weapon skillcaps and behind the scene damage tables are the bigger reason why bard melee isn't great. 40% spell haste and the vast song library go a long way for making up the difference in dps of double attack. Near complete lack of downtime often makes up for lower dps though. I understand not wanting to swarm, but hopefully OP doesn't discount using charm and fear kiting.

Correct, but it frees up a song. When you are meleeing and taking damage, you can only reliably get 3 songs going without interruption between stuns, interrupts and fails.
