Pain, loss, and injustice...all relevant to blues music and to the events being discussed. Adiction, disease, PTSD, etc. Any number of life experiences could be used in place of that. Perhaps I should have chosen spousal abuse so you wouldn't be able to type out that word again, though even that probably has been romanticized somewhere too.
