If you are giving the skelly a "spear," it should only be able to equip the spear in its primary hand. "Shortened spears" are equippable in the off-hand. If I hand my ENC illusionary pet a weapon, it immediately equips the weapon into its off-hand because it spawns with a primary-slot weapon, so "spears" are right out for me.
