Richard Petty, David Pearson, Bobby Alllison, Darrel Waltrip, Cale Yarborough, Earnhardt Sr, Bill Elliot...even some of the less-known drivers like Buddy Baker or Harry Gant, those guys made NASCAR insofar as I cared. Once the last of 'em retired that particular league withered and died, or at least my interest did. The current bunch mostly look and act like so many spoiled brats. Then you have a ton of pay-to-play wastes of space (aka the "Menard effect" further ruining it coupled with idiotic management that seems determined to drive their business into the ground with moronic rules like football-inspired periods and playoffs.
Sport was at its best when they were still allowed to run flat-out. Restrictor plates were stupid. Those mid 80's superspeedway races where they were holding 200+ MPH all the way around the track and where whoever won was as much about his engine holding together as anything else, that's how it should be. They should've moved the spectators farther back instead of slowing stuff down.
