I'm also from the wrong side of the pond. From what I understand the president isn't a representative of the people. He (microaggression, sorry) is a representative of the 50ish states acting as a coalition of nations that make up the USA. I suppose the president is more like a senior trade ambassador for the EU.
As such, despite the problems with the electoral college, I don't think having a nationwide popularity contest would be a fair reflection of who should fulfil the role. Perhaps a better way would be to have a popularity contest for each state as a whole, and use that to decide which candidate each state votes for.
