Legal reasons, mainly. You could also say that it cheapens the integrity of the server as a whole, and while buying characters for plat does so as well, it isn't nearly the same. You still have to acquire a substantial amount of in-game cash, so you won't get someone who has never played before in your Sebilis group. Everquest is easy enough that someone who has played one class to a high level can probably play any class adequately, but not someone who hasn't even played one character to 50+. If someone buys a level 50 rogue, they might not have experience playing that class, but you know they've achieved
something - 50k plat takes some time and effort to farm, and you can't do it in any kind of timely manner until you've already leveled one char to or near 50. Any EQ veteran can pick up any class and learn it well enough to solo and group in a day.
