I think they were, but I think the difference was that you sort of had to find those forums? With facebook and instagram you're just getting the hot beef injection of all the shit all day every day from everywhere. I think they made it too easy to encapsulate yourself in your own echo chamber, or potentially worse, get sucked into someone else's echo chamber and become a part of it.

I don't think anti-vaxx, crystal hugging, herb huffing, self-help, pseudo-science mom groups would exist or have ever acquired the following they did without the help of shit like facebook. I don't doubt forums for those sorts of people existed beforehand, but the blast radius of who knew about them was drastically smaller, and instead of being able to inundate themselves constantly all day, they'd eventually have to talk to normal fucking people who'd be like "No that's bullshit".
