The 5-level thing is a misunderstanding of the restriction that you won't gain xp in a group with a person that's above 1.5 * your level OR 5 levels higher than you, whichever is smaller.

Whichever is larger not smaller. Ex. A lvl 30 can get exp with a lvl 45 in group (30 * 1.5 = 45).
