Would a young child be able to successfully argue with another young child without resorting to name-calling? No, because the children are too young to communicate their hurt feelings to each other and reconcile as adults do.
Same with the people who, when faced with the truth, still cling onto outdated beliefs. With no facts to back them up, they have to resort to name-calling, insults and maybe even fistfights to get the upper hand.
In both cases, the attackers can’t verbalise their arguments because they are grasping at straws. They can’t accept the fact that they are wrong, because doing so would mean an attack on their identities. It’s human nature to do whatever it takes to protect oneself, so they resort to put-downs, insults and fighting in an attempt to preserve their “dignity”.
