Christ said "But for the elect's sake, those days shall be shortened. " That means they pass away and go to Heaven before things get realy bad on earth.

The "elect" are the pneumatics; a concept detailed first by by Valentinus, and echoed by Epiphanius of Salamis, and Origen of Alexandria before they were posthumously declared heretics by the papacy, with the exception of Epiphanius because he eschewed Valentinus while essentially repackaging the concept of "the elect" as being the "church leaders". The impetus being: the church wanted to further the concept of the hylic being capable of being saved by Grace, so that they could prophet off of the hylic adopting a silhouette of the faith through rote practices.
