Community - as toxic as red is, it’s nowhere near as toxic as blue or green.
PvP - this isn’t as much as hunting others down or being hunted down. It just adds an extra level of risk. Without risk you don’t have rewards. Small rewards feel much more grand when you navigate through more risk. It’s why we play classic eq over live. The risk of losing exp, corpse, etc is what makes this game much more enticing. And pvp adds that extra level of risk.

I'd also add that, from a community perspective, Red actually often feels like more people are playing because of global OOC. For OP--I was also someone that had very little interest in PVP, the organized PVP I participated in was fun, but honestly, if you don't want to PVP, you can mostly avoid it.
The XP is so fast you can go to random places and level easily, there's often leveling guilds you can quickly form groups in, it's not nearly as bad as people on blue make it out to be.
It always felt like something big was going on somewhere.
