There is no glimmer of sanity of compromise with the radical right or illiberal left. All we can hope for is that there are enough people on both sides who haven't drunk the Kool Aid and just passively support one of the sides, mostly as defense against the other. Maybe some of those can be peeled back to the center?
Sadly, the center has moved so far right. I'm an 80s/90s republican who finds myself having more in common with "centrist" democrats these days which is in itself odd because as I accumulate more wealth you'd think I'd tack the other way. But as much as I love myself and the fruits of my own labor, I just can't do crazy to save 3%-6% annually.

We can't even agree on the most basic of things to even start a conversation. I literally exhaled through my nose with shock when I read the center has moved right. I'm scoffing as I'm typing this. Do people really believe this? That's rhetoricial. People do. That's why we are in this mess.
