Normal democrats are better-known as "independents" now. The party doesn't want their kind anymore.
EDIT: The problem--the danger, rather--of being liberal-minded is that you have to have the presence of mind to recognize when the battle is won and the goals are achieved. Otherwise you get mission creep and a very real slippery slope such as has happened to any number of reformist movements. Few people are willing to admit "job's done" and in so doing put themselves out of work.
The alternative leads to situations like the daughter's third grade science lesson I noticed the other day where it described dams as horrible things that kill fish and ruin the environment. It said nothing whatsoever about water storage, flood control, or electricity generation. Taking a lemons-into-lemonade mindset, I'm using the opportunity to teach the daughter about propaganda and to read things critically. That being said such garbage "education" should never exist in the first place.
