After the civil war, the union massively expanded federal power over the states, however we do still have a relatively in tact federal system that does create some challenges consolidating data. This is good for the flexibility of our systems and network in that it means there are many redundancies. It is bad for other things. The states themselves are responsible for managing their elections. The fact that the states control their own elections does a lot to prevent a demagogue like Donald Trump have undue influence over the election. If the voting system were consolidated at the federal level in the way you suggest, the system would be more susceptible to fraud. There is very little voter fraud in the united states, and the system is quite robust. When the president himself invents and then supports his own conspiracy theories it makes non existent problems that should be easy to solve look like they exist and should be solved.
The system works fine. The only difference is that there are more mail in votes than normal because of coronavirus, which is the only thing that makes counting different and slower than normal. Plus all the lawsuits.
Besides everything, the most harmful thing that ol' trump does is degrade the strength of the institutions of the USA for his own short term political gains. He has truly degraded the nation in this way.
