Oh that's super-duper easy. You see, Obama was a lame-duck. No matter what happened in the next election, Obama was going bye bye. So Mitch the Honorable decided to let the people decide; they would elect a new president who would be 100% not Obama and that person would then have the privilege.
This is completely not the case now. Trump the Incumbent is rightly choosing the justice as is proper of one expected to retain the office.

There was a solid understanding for many years - a sort of peace when it came to fucking with the Supreme Court and its balance. This was violated in 2016. There will be retribution - probably not now, but sometime.

The violation happened in 2013, when Harry Reid and the Democrats removed the filibuster and the 60 vote requirement for judicial appointments. Mitch told Harry if he did that there would be hell to pay, because Harry was breaking like 200 years of precedent and shit. I think he said "You’ll regret this, and you may regret this a lot sooner than you think." which is cool because he never swore but I would have definitely thrown a 'motherfucker' in there. So yeah, of course the Democrats caused this trouble, just like every fucking other thing I swear the incompetent evil shits.
