If technology has advanced to the point where we can store data like a character name, level, their progression into a level, etc... why is it so hard for people to understand that a message is just another database row at that point? Also, text compresses extremely well.

There are a lot of Advertising Words and False Security used when peddling a product to the masses. People believe some company ran by people they've never met has their best interest in heart.
This is pretty transparent in the vpn market for example. Some companies keep copies of information, Some claim they destroy all records or keep none.
People don't want to read the fine print and have it translated by a lawyer. So they bah into their pen. Sign up for a service and live a lie under the guise of (false) security.
