There's a weird expectation of privacy on services you use online that people never seem to understand.
EQ is not a peer to peer game. Tells go from your client, to the P1999 server, to another client. You absolutely can log any traffic that comes from the client, including tells.
And really, that's only the tip of the iceberg. Imagine what Facebook gets away with regarding their hall monitors.
Also with Facebook, one false law enforcement request that 'looks legit' and they're required by policy (not by law) to give you another person's entire private messages.
And you all willingly give up personal information online because there's expectation of privacy... in an online era where your personal information *is* the product.
