My empathy level has been shaped somewhat by National Socialism and International Communism both which predate the internet. I found a book once when I was a young child and it had a list of all the people murdered by the state murder-machine and I saw all these people and they were all my family:

And I know that list was true because it was written by the state murder-machine operators themselves who kept accurate numbers both in that book and on human skin (except for Alicja, she didn't get a number because she was just an infant). What really shaped my empathy was the fact that my blood are confirmed OG Papists, the whole lot. They didn't get murdered because they were Jews, they got murdered because the murder-machine was in motion and it needed to murder. Nothing personal. The Communists on the other hand took things very personally but they were more disorganized and they were likely to take your relative and lose them in a tungsten mine for six years and be like oh he's probably volunteering at the farm but no one comes back from the farm with pulmonary fibrosis and amputations.

My grandpa used to tell me the best jokes, most don't translate well because in Eastern Europe they were all political. This one was one of my favorites:

Q: A soldier is sitting in a trench and he looks to the east and he sees a Russian soldier charging at him and then he looks to the west and he sees a German soldier charging at him. Which one does he shoot first?
A: The Russian! Business before pleasure.

What made that joke terrific was that you could swap the nationalities depending on which mass-murdering neighbor was threatening you at the time. I knew a bunch of jokes like that and when it was just my grandpa and his OG friends I knew the coms were secure so I would come out and tell my jokes and everyone slapped the table and yelled 'kurwa no tak jest', so I knew I was a hit.

And that's the story of how I learned that dead bodies in the streets were funny. I wanted to explain myself so that people don't think I'm being mean or evil. I'm merely a product of my environment, like Khan Noonian Singh.
I like the one where the submarine has a screendoor.
