the answer is that all the compression and stuff turns the impact into an explosion, just by the dispersion of all that kinetic energy. it's not just rocks hitting things -- impacts on the scale like we see on the moon from earth were all both kinetic impacts of relatively large bodies and massive chemical detonations with a spherical type pattern. however that is a cool angle you are trying out there ^^
