am i right in thinking that "virus tests", I don't know the word for it, detect antibodies instead of the viral genome itself or whatever words make more sense?

the only "virus test" i can think of presently involves adding antibodies into blood sample which will do something you can see visibly with a microscope, like fluoresce, if activated (ie, if the added immunoglobulins react with viral body). so you are testing for the viral bodies themselves using antibodies known to be triggered by viral body.
