Without context people make assumptions you're using a word in the way it is most commonly *used*.
This is why I could say "the flowers were very colorful and gay" and people might understand I'm not using it to refer to homosexual flowers. On the flip side, most husbands do say they are gay on their wedding day, because despite being used properly the word would be misinterpreted by most.
