The difference is most of those are preventable through a proven vaccine. Put aside wether or not you believe it gives autism or whatever it protects against flu.

This new flu has no known vaccine (and would require at least 6 months to develop one and create enough doses for bare minimum healthcare workers and priority people)

So really it IS more of a deal
Well for most people basic hygiene is an effective preventative precaution against infection from flu type illness... except unfortunately most people suck at basic hygiene and that has a knock on effect for everyone those people interact with.
