That's quite debatable. A lot of human deaths throughout the course of our history have come in the name of religion. A lot of cultures have been destroyed because of aggressive conversion practices. If by stabilize you mean that after it's destroyed anything 'other' and supplanted itself as the primary practice of the majority left standing, then yes I agree.

And I'm not only referencing the atrocities of the past, because even today we have hate groups or terrorist organizations who use religion as the reason to inflict pain, suffering, and judgement upon others.
We literally wouldn’t have morality if we didn’t have a fear of God. You’ll question that but look into atheistic countries and how well they do morally.... in pretty much every case. When you don’t have a fear of god it often enables people to do terrible terrible things.

That being said, there are forces at work to subvert religions and it’s been done successfully. Groups like ISIS were created and pushed by non Muslim groups. Christianity's higher ranks right now aren’t very Christian.

Religion largely builds communities, keeps them healthy, keeps individuals healthy and on track and is the reason so much charity work is done around the world.
