There are FAR better head units than the 900 or to less extent the 800, but most kiddies buy the JCM900 with their parents money because it's highly accessible, cheap, and has high distortion thresh-holds... That or because it's what Slayer/Malmsteen/Wylde or whatever the top shred master at the time uses.
Literally I can walk into a Guitar Center and see several 900's lining the walls next to flying V's
