Because even as you stated - if the government has superior firepower, we are many and many can do more than a few. If you give people the right to organize when something is immoral and overthrow the oppressor with a sometimes needed force, they need to be able to arm themselves. Being able to arm and organize protects speech, oppression and immoral acts. The problem being if you aren't willing to use force and they are, you have to comply.
