The lure of capitalism and free markets ends once it starts undermining the national interest imo. The West has been so dumb in allowing Chinese corporations, which are controlled by, or at least loyal to, the politbureau in Beijing, take huge stakes in western industries. It's not just China, in my own country we've seen vital industries taken over by foreign state-owned players where our own companies are not allowed to compete.
Don't overlook the role of the mainstream media either, it seems crazy to me that in the USA it's seen as brave and inspiring to protest against the US flag/national anthem, but stupid/far-right to protest against China's brutal crackdown in Hong Kong, or their concentration camps for Uighur Muslims.
