All of my first characters did Gfay/Crushbone as their starting areas; I found it very effective, but once I was introduced to the Qeynos system, I knew Qeynos was vastly superior.
But give GF a shot - it might be worth the "newness" of the experience, and there are plenty of very good places to hunt on Faydwer after 10 or so

Plus, Crushbone nearly always has newbie groups going on...
