Keep in mind that summon only fires off if it's been at least 10 seconds since the last summon, AND the mob has a melee attack ready to use (and isn't casting, and is below 97% hp, of course). So if you're trying to use charm to kill (especially if your pet isn't also 51+), slow on the mob can buy you a bit of extra time usually to recharm before you get summoned (or to mez the mob if it isn't dotted, I guess?). I assume you'll still probably get summoned, especially if you're doing the slowing and not your pet via proc, but at least you won't get your song charm bashed as often and your pet maybe can get aggro back before 10 seconds pass and another summon is ready.
You can also force the mob to burn its summon on your pet so that, with good timing, the summon isn't ready to use on you when charm breaks. Pet back off a few times so it tried to come back towards you will probably trigger a summon even if there's no snares/roots involved, and your pet won't miss much melee damage in that time. This probably is your best bet for handling this, I would think.
