You will have to do the same you did but running Windows in safe mode and deleting your recovery points so the virus can not spread anymore

This is one big thing that's important. First boot into safe mode
with networking, update all your antivirus programs. (I had Malwarebytes miss a few, running Spybot S&D atm, I run both and it covers everything pretty well).
Then use the run command and type in msconfig, click the start-up tab and look for suspicious programs that load up when you boot the PC.. Be sure you know what you're turning off first (research the name if possible)! But I've found some few are in here and need to be shut down before they can be removed.
Once everything's updated (and if possible have Spybot in), and definite malware shutdown via msconfig, reboot into safe mode
without networking and run everything you just updated.
And I'm not even positive that'll do it all. If not, my most extreme measure is to boot into safe mode, and use system restore from there to go back awhile. And then do all the above just to be safe. I've never had to format for a virus yet. They are out there, but those are a little more rare and do far worse things than hijack a browser (usually!)
Hope it helps some. I feel your pain!
