I think you aren't giving credit where it's due.

Trade skills are a huge plat sink. There are vendor purchased weapons and armour that are big plat sinks too. In vanilla these were actually 'reasonable'. The problem being competing looted items may have been slightly too common, which was compounded further by the quality of items available from the temple of sol ro, planes and kunark items.

The market is now flooded with half decent looted items available to players very cheaply, and these looted items vendor reasonably well. This means few people are using store bought or tradeskilled armour to remove plat from the economy, and dropped items which aren't used are vendored, adding plat into the economy.
