Why would you open your door at all before you asked who it is? I'm sure your $100 Hi Point sucks but it can still shoot through a door if someone started trying to kick it in after you asked who it was. One arm out the door and one leg behind it is the home defense equivalent of shooting a pistol sideways, something you see in movies you shouldn't replicate.
Even if you live in a nice neighborhood where you don't have a steel security door at least spend $10 on a peep hole.
