If you live in a state with a "Savers" or similar recycled fashion retailer, you can usually get a pretty solid deal on formal wear if you are very careful in inspecting before you buy. Make sure you do some reading on the difference between sportscoats, blazers, and suits and the fabrics typically associated with each type, so that you're not buying suit-coats that don't have the matching slacks, and/or pairing inappropriately, and/or inappropriately buttoning/unbuttoning, because those in the know will identify your naivette and you'll out yourself;

With the really high level of affluency here in the Bay Area, our secondhand clothing stores have a ridiculously nice selection of formal and semi-formal men's fashion at 15 to 25% of the retail price.
