Yes this is normal. You probably used an AoE ability or something on the priest of discord. Did you give him the book in your inventory? Do not do that! just destroy it. It will flag you for pvp and you can't group with anyone pretty much lol.
When you die you should have to run back to where you died and loot your corpse to get your gear back. As a bard you get a song to locate corpses pretty early on so that should help. I recommend just /shout "(your level) bard LFG" and see where that takes you. It's a pretty good community and people want to help you learn to play.
