I want to play a Barbarian but the newbie area in Everfrost is ridiculous. I don't mind a challenge or grinding out levels, but there are very few mobs I can actually kill in this zone. I don't have any money.

This is the exact thing that happened way back in 2000. I really wanted to be a shammy due to having sow so early but constantly died in EF and couldn't find my corpses( was before I knew about Eqatlas or anything really). I definitely did not want to be a troll or ogre. Got so frustrated I rolled Druid finally.
