Add to that Symbols cost me 10 plat per cast I'm always broke. I don't seem to group with any warriors, usually rangers and monks who seem to while deal great damage take a ton while at it so I'm usually hit 2-3 with Symbols at a time. Put in a several hor session and I'm out a lot of platinum. Then you get the ones that get offended when I don't hit them and only give regular buffs. That Adds up fast. I do spend a lot of time buffing low lvls when I can.

In my experience, the best thing to do is give out regular buffs and if someone asks for a symbol, say you don't have any on hand or ask for replacement peridots. If neither of those work, I also keep a stack of jaspers on me to do lower level symbols in a pinch. Usually the people QQing for symbols are either terribly geared warriors who need the HP to look less terrible or someone in top tier gear who should be able to afford some peridot money. The first gem to the cleric rule can work pretty well, but not all groups agree to it or on rare occasions, that gem may not drop.
The idea that anyone should be expected to pay out of pocket to buff someone else is asinine. I don't know if it's still true, but some guilds used to make their clerics pay for peridots themselves to buff the raid. Now imagine you being the only 60 cleric and the raid wipes to something stupid (which is usually the case). No thanks.
