if you use the bone chips faction quest, don't you have to use some kind of trick in order for it to work, like sneak/FD or something? Won't you be KoS to those guards before faction grinding?

You kill stuff to get dubious with legion that's the comparitvly quick and easy part.
As a brell worshipping dorf I got to Threatning with 1500 kills, and apprehensive by 2000 kills of mixed goblins/forsaken (forsaken/bandits/mauraders are how you get iksar necro faction) and maxed FV too.
Then you can start handing in bonechips to trooper mozo (legion of cabalis) from dubious onwards. It's getting to dubious with shammys, sk's, monks and merchants that is the hard part.
