While there is a lot of focus on Kunark and the Field of Bone, I wouldn't suggest making a lizard on the basis of getting grouped to start with.
Most starter zones (unless you roll a troll, ogre or erudite) will have others on to group with that I've found.
As for classes, never roll a class that's "needed" as such - you might get to the 20s and decide you hate it. Play something you know you'll enjoy
