Ok, so for my spell effects being outdated.
I tried the multiple suggestions on the forum, resetting router, wifi passwd, ethernet cables etc.
Then I found a post (i now can't find) which had one commenter who suggested that he missed changing the DSETUP.dll to dsetup.dll (for linux). Well, in my case, I actually had both. So I deleted the DSETUP.dll and retained the dsetup.dll...and so far we're good. Not sure about logging in or anything yet, but the character creation is normal so far.
