I feel like SK seemed to be pretty 'meh' until I hit 30. As far as soloing, you're probably making the right choice to swap. SK can solo decently if you have room to fear kite. I did several levels solo in the upper 30s fear kiting at SF ramp in Overthere.
I haven't played shaman, so can't comment on that. Druid was my main for a long time and it's flexible and easy to level once you hit 20ish. Been working on a necro recently and it's a super budget twink. Spent maybe 600p on it and it feels like the easiest leveling of any character I played (beginning from level 16. 1-15 suck as is usual for most classes.

It's a long road but I'm sure a SK could do Sessexdrix's necro guide as a solo thing with a few adjustments.
The one thing that's burnt in my memory watching SKs solo is seeing them at it at 59. Necro is slow enough, each combat for a SK has to be beyond 2-3 minutes... the OT hammer hand in guy is one such target. Rumor has it the ogre SK I saw doing him a couple of years back is still out there swinging.
