I had a lot of fun with my Wizard, being almost exclusively a solo class on p99. They have a lot of utility, versatility, and survivability in the open world and in dungeons. They're very self-sufficient. Ports (obvioulsy), excellent roots and snares, both types of invis, stuns, big & efficient single target, quad, and aoe nukes in different elemental flavors, and several good self-buffs.

And once you can quad kite in the mid-late 30s you can rocket into the mid 50s very rapidly.

It's a fun class to be able to explore the world and do a lot of quests and off the beaten path camps and stuff. Plus now at 60 with some decent gear I can camp most old world dungeons solo and run many quests to twink my other characters. [You must be logged in to view images. If you're brave, adventurous, and clever you can do all sorts of fun things that people might not expect.

They're not a desired class in a group setting unfortunately, so bear that in mind. You will be playing solo most of the time. But as a utility class for the solo player without huge blocks of time to commit to the game, it's been a good choice.

A druid would probably fit this description, too, while offering some more groupability. But wizards have more firepower at their disposal and invis vs undead opens up a lot of areas that would be a huge pain in the ass as a druid. Plus there are too many druids on p99 [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
