This kind of thing always brings me back to Dave Grossman.

"If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen, a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath, a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? What do you have then? A sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero's path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed."

It's not about race. It's about decency. Wolves need to be put down each and every time we encounter them, regardless of color or condition. What bothers me most is not that this kind of thing happens - basic criminology suggests that there will always be criminals awaiting the opportunity to begin or advance their trade - it's that the ratio of sheepdogs to wolves is unbalanced (sometimes intentionally by the State) to the point that this sort of thing can not only happen, but can go on for this long without a single decent person in the crowd being equipped or capable of stepping forward and ending it.

Sad in so many ways.
