Yeah, I actually share that opinion. However, you should consider (or don't) the concept of liminality:

"In anthropology, liminality (from the Latin word līmen, meaning "a threshold") is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rites, when participants no longer hold their preritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the rite is complete."

Non-binary gender identification is quick way to consolidate your ego when you're literally in the middle. I don't like it, but it may serve as an apt description seeing as I'm going to be in the depths of liminal weirdness pretty soon myself. As much as I'd like to, I can't get to point B from A immediately.
