You didn't
need any items (let alone "need badly") when you first started: classic EverQuest players leveled up just fine while wearing bronze armor

You have to understand, the staff didn't just spend all their free time on this server so you could play a free game: they made it so they could "beta test" classic EQ as they developed it. It is in fact VERY classic, and the entire reason Blue exists is to find and make fixes like this to get the code even closer to classic.
