Umm I always used dots when charming.
Charm mob A sick on B
Dot dot dot dot dot mob B. When A charm breaks charm B then sick on A and dot A up.
Rinse and repeat. You end up with 2 mobs wailing on each other on top of full dot dps. Mobs die faster and you save mana by not having to use the charm song as many times per fight.

Yeah if you're going to be charming, there is no good reason not to be dotting the mobs with all 3 chants unless you just don't feel like it. Once a bard runs out of mana it takes forever to get it back at 2mana/tick and keeping the mobs continuously dotted will make a big difference in how long you can charm before AFKing for 45+min
