I'm from Texas and didn't quite know how to react to this type of stuff on my first interaction either. I had someone who was genderqueer try to dictate their pronouns to me. I thought it was ridiculous and not within their rights to tell me how to speak the english language.

But what I've learned is, if someone feels strongly enough about this type of thing that they will go through these actions -- and make no mistake, they are acutely aware of how many weird looks they get -- then you should be able to let it roll of your shoulders. They clearly feel its important enough to go through this, and therefore you making these type of statements is really just being difficult and an ass for no reason. Make it less about you.
