There's a concept called "family audience." The idea that its a movie made with child-appropriate content, but its not entirely for kids either. They try to make it interesting to those that think more on an adult level.

This way not everything is fucking segmented and we have some common, child-appropriate, shared cultural language and tropes.

Like older "kids" movies and Disney and such. Disney seems to prioritize child entertainment more -- probably because that's what brings home the beacon. But Shrek is still quite watchable to adults.

Not everything has to be loaded with sex or Quentin Tarantino style adult conversation and content.
